Presenter:
Sara Totten has worked in education for the last 18 years, with the last 12 years serving as a director of special education. Sara holds a doctorate in educational leadership, has served as the president of the Wisconsin Council for Administrators of Special Services, and has taught as an adjunct instructor for Lakeland University’s master-level counseling program. Sara has published in scholarly journals and provided numerous presentations. Sara currently works for the special education compliance team at DPI.

La lectura durante el verano es una buena forma de evitar que los niños pierdan terreno sobre lo aprendido durante el año escolar. En este taller exploraremos las diferentes maneras, en que los miembros de la familia pueden apoyar la lectura de sus hijos en casa y conversaremos por qué es importante apoyar la lectura en el verano. También aprenderemos a elegir el libro “correcto” y otros consejos, estrategias y oportunidades cotidianas para que las familias se involucren con sus hijos en torno a la alfabetización en el verano.
Objetivos:
- Aprender por qué la lectura es importante en el verano
- Mostrar opciones para fomentar la lectura en casa
- Aprender diferentes maneras para involucrar la lectura en la vida cotidiana
Presentadora: Alejandra Loeza es la Especialista en difusión bilingüe de WI FACETS, anteriormente trabajó como voluntaria durante varios años en diferentes organizaciones que atienden las necesidades de la comunidad. Tiene 13 años de experiencia personal navegando en el sistema de educación especial. A Loeza le apasiona brindar información a las familias porque comprende los desafíos que pueden enfrentar los padres de niños con necesidades especiales. Además, ha trabajado como visitante domiciliaria compartiendo actividades de alfabetización, lectura y lenguaje con familias. Alejandra ha participado en algunos comités. This training is designed for students who are nearing the transition age and their parents. During this training, they will learn about important transition and postsecondary terms, get tips on how to prepare for the transition IEP meeting, know what to expect in a transition IEP meeting, learn how to stay engaged and motivated throughout the transition process, and get access to self-advocacy tools and resources for students.
Join us as we present a new resource from WI FACETS, the Transition IEP Checklist. Written to provide more detail on the transition section of our IEP Checklist, this stand-alone publication serves as an excellent resource for the transition process for students with disabilities who have IEPs. This guide is intended for both parents and youth alike and provides organizational outlines and many transition resources.
During this training, transition-age students and their parents will learn important transition and postsecondary terms, tips on how to prepare for the transition IEP meeting, what to expect in a transition IEP meeting, how to stay engaged and motivated throughout the transition process, and self-advocacy tools and resources for students.

Presenter: Ann Zielke is new to the team at WI FACETS having joined as the Parent Training and Information Center Trainer in November. As a parent who understands firsthand the complexity of navigating the special education system in Wisconsin, she is passionate about the importance of accessible and informative parent education and training. She is a fierce advocate for her daughter and all children with disabilities, and she looks forward to serving families across the state with WI FACETS.

Other Health Impairment is meant as another option when a learner has disability relate needs that may be caused by or as a result of a medical condition. However, just because a learner has a medical diagnosis, it does not always mean they are eligible for specially designed instruction or Special Education. Join us for information about OHI, some of the more common or uncommon conditions and the resources available when it comes to supporting a learner with disability related needs and OHI

- Parents/Family members will have some ideas regarding what kind of information and input they can bring to the Evaluation IEP meeting.
- Participants will have an improved awareness of various DPI and external resources related to Other Health Impairment.
- Participants will better understand what to do with medical evaluation information when provided by the family or a medical evaluator.
Presenter: Eva Kubinski
Eva Kubinski is the state program consultant for Other Health Impairment. She has been a member of the Special Education Team at DPI for 20 years and is also the state program consultant for Orthopedic Impairment and Traumatic Brain Injury. Prior to joining DPI she was a school psychologist for several Wisconsin school districts and a technical assistance provider for a federally funded center.

Presenter: Maxine Hengen has a master’s degree in special education and has been a Special Education Teacher in Milwaukee Public Schools for nineteen years. She has trained Milwaukee Public School staff on various autism-related topics for ten years. She spoke at the Autism Society of Wisconsin annual conference and with students at Alverno College.
